"Lady Assassin sidesteps, gets me in the center of my back, but not as deep this time. I spun away from the sink, dropped to my hands and knees. That first blow brought him down, but it didn't kill him." About my height, but a hundred pounds heavier. She was the one who shut me out of this case. Her hands are sweating, and she closes her eyes at the last second." Probably she's aiming for my neck or spine, but she's no pro-that's obvious from the mess she left behind. Lady Assassin tiptoes up behind me and plunges a big old kitchen knife deep into my left shoulder. I've got the water running full throttle because I'm Anthony Costello and I never do anything halfway. "The lady assassin approaches me from behind," I continued, "as I'm rinsing my mug. I wasn't going to let the department pin a murder on her-especially not when it was me who sent her to work for Costello in the first place. "As ticked off as I am right now?" Detective Heidi Haagen asked. I'm probably ticked off at having to do my own dishes." It's early in the morning, and either the help's asleep or they haven't arrived yet. "I'm Anthony Costello, accountant to the mob, nephew of top dog Vincent Costello. "Assume for a second that it was a female killer," I began. I took a coffee cup from the sink, started the faucet running. "LET'S KILL him again in slow motion," I said.

Butler, “Her imaginative stories are transcendent fables, which have as much to do with the future as with the present and the past.” The MacArthur Foundation said of Octavia E. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to be awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant. She wrote 12 novels and won each of science fiction’s highest honors. What follows is a tour of the worlds that made her - and the worlds that she made. The future she wrote about is now our present moment. Sixteen years after her death, the writer Octavia Butler is experiencing a renaissance.īutler, seen here on a mural at a middle school that bears her name, is celebrated for novels that grappled with extremism, racial justice and the climate crisis. Again, Electric Idol is on the nominee list, but I haven’t started the series yet. Part of Your World and Neon Gods are two books I want to read. I’m sure these can be read as standalone books like most romances, but I prefer to read them in order. I know it’s Twisted Hate on the list, but that’s the third book in the series. There are also three that I own the paperback of, but haven’t read yet: Things We Never Get Over and Twisted Love. Hopefully I can get this one read before the end of 2022. I’m really surprised I haven’t read this one yet. Out of all of these books there is one I had an e-arc of and still really need to read. (If you can click on the title I’ve posted a review.) Dil, The Kiss Curse, It Starts with Us, Reminders of Him, Delilah Green Doesn’t Care, and Book Lovers. I’ve read: Hook, Line, and Sinker, Every Summer After, Love on the Brain, The Bodyguard, Dating Dr. All of them were fun books and I enjoyed some more than others, but there weren’t any I disliked. Out of the 20 titles in the first round I’ve read 10! Since I’ve kept an eye out on these awards I don’t think I’ve ever read this many. I’m actually pleasantly surprised by how many I’ve already read. Isabelle took a look at the fantasy nominees yesterday and today I’m taking a look at the romance nominees. It’s always fun to see what books make the list and if we’ve read them. There’s a big chance that you’ve seen that Goodreads has opened their first round of voting for the Goodreads Choice Awards 2022.
